Where should I plant SunPatiens?
You can plant SunPatiens anywhere in your garden. In full sun or in the shade. Rain or wind, this plant can handle it all.
In a small garden, on a patio or balcony, plant SunPatiens in pots. If you have more space, plant them directly in the ground to create a vibrant, low-maintenance border that lasts all summer long.
How do I plant a SunPatiens in my garden?
Remove the plant from its growing pot and gently loosen the roots. If they tear slightly, don’t worry – this actually encourages the roots to grow. Place the plant(s) in a nice patio pot, balcony planter or directly in the ground. Water it and enjoy!
Tip 1: Always remove the plant from its nursery pot. If you don’t, the roots won’t develop properly and the plant may struggle.
Tip 2: First, decide where you’d like to place your SunPatiens – in the ground or in a large pot on the patio? Buy enough plants for the spot you’ve chosen.
Tip 3 – for planting in the ground: Add a small amount of fresh compost or garden soil to the planting hole to give the roots an extra boost, especially in heavier clay soils.
Frequently asked questions
You might think SunPatiens® is just a New Guinea Impatiens – but it’s actually quite different. SunPatiens® is a hybrid developed from genetics originating in Indonesia. It has a much stronger root system, a longer flowering period, better tolerance to heat and intense sunlight, and produces more flowers than traditional New Guinea Impatiens. This makes it an ideal bedding plant. In-store, you can recognise genuine SunPatiens® by its branded pot or label.
SunPatiens is designed for convenience.: New blooms naturally grow over older ones, so there’s no need for deadheading.
If you do decide to remove old flowers, the next buds will open faster, sometimes within a day!
A SunPatiens is still a plant, and naturally needs watering from time to time. It can tolerate a bit of drought very well, but if you’ve forgotten to water it once and the plant is completely limp? Don’t worry. Just water it and the SunPatiens will be back on its feet in no time. Have you forgotten to water it for a bit longer? Flowering may pause briefly, but it will soon return.
A SunPatiens can thrive without fertiliser and will continue to flower for months even without it. However, because of its long flowering period, a little extra fertiliser will help it perform at its best. This helps the plant to continue flowering at its best. If fresh soil hasn’t been used, fertiliser is recommended but not essential.
SunPatiens is available in three series (see range). The number of plants depends on the variety and the desired effect (a small pot or balcony box, or a large outdoor bed).
A guideline:
It varies between 3-10 plants per m² in the ground. The ‘Landscape Legend’, also known as the Vigorous series, grows slightly taller and wider, whilst the ‘Patio’ series, for example, remains smaller.
We usually recommend around 3 plants in a large pot for an instantly full look. One plant is also possible, but it will take longer to fill out.
